Why is the R sound so hard  to learn?
The R sound can be tricky to learn. Your child may have practiced R words many times and still not know exactly what to do with their tongue and lips to make the sound they want.
At Home Run Speech®, we start by helping learners find a clear, strong “er” sound. We call the wise tree character, Rooter, because it shows and teaches us that the foundation (or root) for all R sounds is the "er."
Once your child knows how to make a strong “er,” they have a starting point. From there, they can learn how to use R in words, sentences, and eventually everyday conversations.
You are an important part of your child’s R team.
Your child may work with an SLP or SLPA, but most of their week happens outside of speech sessions. That gives you many chances to help your child practice what they are learning.
You don’t need long practice sessions. You do need to understand what your child is working on so you can practice the same skills at home.
